Okay, so today I’m going to tell you how to find diamonds in Minecraft.
Diamonds are very difficult to find in Minecraft because Diamond Ore is one of the rarest blocks in the game, but also the most sought-after because it’s the best material for making strong tools, body armour, swords and the enchantment table. They look great around houses, too.
The most effective way to mine for diamonds is using a method called branch mining, but you can also find them by caving or digging huge spaces near to lava pools on level 11.
Branch mining in Minecraft, as mentioned above, is the most effective way of finding diamonds in Minecraft. It’s pretty straightforward, but does require a lot of pickaxes, food and torches.
The first thing you want to do before heading underground to begin branch mining is craft plenty of iron pickaxes and torches, source of a bit of food from animals, plants or villages, and also take a couple of shovels as it gets get very annoying trying to move through dirt with a pickaxe.
Once ready you’ll want to dig down to level 11, creating stairs to easily return to the surface.
Level 11, at least in my experience, is the best level for finding diamonds, although they can be found anywhere between levels 12 and 16. Level 11 usually has lava on foot level, too.
Once at level 11 you’ll want to turn to your left or right and start digging a straight tunnel – 2 blocks high and 1 block wide. Face forward hit out 5 blocks on your head level, then hit out the 5 blocks beneath at your foot level, move forward and repeat. You’re branch mining.
Place a torch down on the ground every 10 blocks to keep the tunnels well lit.
It’s up to you how far you go down each tunnel. I used to count 10 torches, so try that, then come back to the opening of the tunnel, and start another with 2 blocks between each tunnel.
Using this method you’ll quickly find a lot of coal, iron and gold. And then diamonds.
Here’s a picture of branch mining in progress:
You’ll often find yourself bumping into huge caves, lava pits and rivers. Always explore these areas and spend extra time digging near lava as this is where you’ll find diamonds.
Another method you can use to find diamonds in Minecraft is simply caving.
This involves finding huge caves and caving systems to explore. The easiest way of doing this is by finding entrances on the surface, although you’ll also find them branch mining.
Always be careful when entering and exploring caves. Huge drops will kill you, and you obviously don’t want to fall in any lava if you’re carrying diamonds, because you’ll cry. Always carry plenty of torches and use them to make your way back. If you get lost, simply dig to the surface.

Diamonds can be found anywhere, but are usually always found near to lava.
- What level do you find diamonds in Minecraft?
Diamonds can be commonly found between levels 12 and 16, but the optimum level to mine, in my experience, is level 11. This is because lava is usually at foot level.
