6 Tips for Positive Thinking & Mindfulness

We all have days when we feel like the world is against us, when nothing seems to go right for us and we feel like even getting out of bed is a massive effort.

So here are a few tips on how to get your day off to a good start and how to put yourself in a better frame of mind. Positive thinking and mindfulness doesn’t happen overnight of course but just by reading a few inspirational quotes, you can put things into perspective and see things from a different angle.

How to Be Positive

Chances are that things are not always as bad as we initially think, and what seems like a failure to us now can take us on an amazing journey towards a better and brighter future. It goes for everything. Failed relationship that seems like the end of the world right now, a friend who betrayed your trust, losing a job you most likely hated anyway and the list goes on and on.

When things go wrong, our brain seems to focus on all the negatives and puts us into this endless cycle of stress and negativity which is so hard to break. We don’t see the positives around us, all the people who care and help, all the opportunities that are waiting for us to grab them. And here is where mindful thinking comes into the picture, but only if we allow it. The more you practise mindful thinking, the more it will drown out all of the negativity.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is acknowledging your feelings, anger, grief, even your negative thoughts.

Mindfulness is about knowing your mistakes but letting go of them. It’s about how we deal with things because just like the world turns, nothing ever stays the same and some things are out of our control. It’s about learning to enjoy the present moment, letting go of the past and leaving it where it belongs and not worrying or trying to predict the future because in all honesty none of us know what lies ahead of us.

Positive Thinking Tips

So if you ever find yourself stuck in a rut, feeling stressed or hopeless, here are some simple but effective tips on how to make yourself feel better:

  • Focus on the small positive things
    They all build a bigger picture. Be grateful for them. It be as little as a joke a friend told you and it made you smile, or your child said something funny. Even just finishing your morning coffee while it’s still hot. You will notice that the more little things you pick up on, it will become easier to see the positive in everything around you.
  • Be kind to others
    Smile at a stranger, your smile could brighten their day and could be the only smile they see all day. Happiness is infectious!
  • Try and help others
    Open the shop door for the little old lady, or ask if she needs help carrying her shopping.See someone struggling? Ask how they are doing and if you can do anything for them. Don’t just throw your change in a homeless person’s cup, ask how they are and listen. Just like you, they are human and have feelings.
  • Notice the colours, smells and sounds around you
    Sounds crazy I know, but when was the last time you stopped and just took in the colour of a flower growing by the side of the road? Or heard your favourite music and actually listened to the instruments playing? These little things train your brain to focus on, and appreciate, the smaller things.
  • Take time for yourself and breathe
    Today’s world is hectic enough so make sure you do something for YOU! Whether it be jogging, having a long soak in the bath, cooking, watching your favourite TVshow or anything that makes you smile and makes you feel good.
  • Give yourself credit
    And by that I mean take compliments but most importantly compliment yourself. Notice the good you have done that day, what you have achieved that day. Be kind to yourself and let your inner voice tell you what you would say to a friend.
