How to Become a Freelance Writer & Make Money Writing in the UK

Make Money Writing

There are a lot of people in the UK who love writing, but most of them are doing it for free. I’m going to show you how you can become a freelance writer and start making money from your writing at home. Getting paid to write has got to be one of the best feelings in the world.

I make money writing this blog. I don’t deal with clients, instead I make money from affiliate networks, sponsored posts and display advertising. That’s an option for you, too!

Start Your Own Blog

The most effective and powerful way to make money from your writing, and draw attention to yourself as a freelance writer in order to get work is to start your own blog. You can show off your writing style, abilities and knowledge, and make money from affiliate links and display ads.

I wrote a complete post about making money from a blog which you can read over here, and I’d recommend using WP Engine as your WordPress hosting provider. It’s only £20 a month.

You can also link to your posts when potential clients ask for examples of your work.

The great thing about writing on your own blog is that the content you write will potentially make you money for years to come, from organic search engine traffic. That surely beats a one-time payment from a client you get, who will be making money from your content instead, right?

Of course writing and managing your own blog means you have to market it yourself, which is why writing for clients is often the option of choice for the majority of writers.

Blogs That Pay You to Write

There are lots of websites and blogs out there who will pay you to write content for them, sometimes a flat fee and sometimes based on the amount of engagement it receives. I’m going to focus on the blogs that pay a flat fee only and avoid the revenue sharing blogs.

Make sure you read the contributor guidelines before attempting to write content for any of these blogs, some are stricter and have more detailed requirements than the others.

Here are some blogs who will pay you to write for them:

  • Listverse – Pays $100
Write a unique, fun and interesting top 10 list with at least one or two paragraphs per item and Listverse will pay you $100 for your efforts. Learn more here.
  • Marty Rogers – Pays £50
I’ll pay you to write great and insightful content for my blog. I’m looking for fun parenting stories and tips, how-to guides on making money, and more. Learn more here.
  • Skint Dad – Pays £30
Write a great, engaging and actionable post about making or saving money. Skint Dad is a very popular blog meaning great coverage for your writing. Learn more here.

Write Articles for Money

Writing articles and copywriting for websites and blogs is one of the easiest and most popular ways to make money from your writing as a freelance writer, and there are lots of sites out there where you can find and pitch for work from those looking for content writing services.

Here are some sites where you can offer your services:

People Per Hour is probably the leading platform for people looking for the best freelancers online, and you can be one of them. Join today, build out your new freelancer profile, list an hourlie offering your content writing services and start building your reputation. Use my link to join People Per Hour and you’ll get £30 free to get started, for buying or selling.

Fiverr is the world’s largest gig website, and marketplace, for freelancers like you. Originally, all gigs cost $5 which restricted the type of services bought, and talent available, but fortunately those days are gone and you can now earn your worth on Fiverr. Join and list your gigs.

Here are some sites where people are looking for you:

ProBlogger Jobs is a job board on a hugely popular blog for bloggers where business owners, agencies and brands are looking for talented content writers like you to work for them.

Another idea is to pitch your services, via cold emails or phone calls, to marketing and design agencies. More specifically, SEO agencies, as they will be writing a lot of content as part of the marketing campaigns they are actively doing for their clients. I worked at one.

Write an eBook / Book

Another great way to make money writing, as a freelancer or maybe a student looking for extra cash, is writing and publishing an eBook or book online. It’s much easier than you’d think.

Here are some sites where you can publish and make money from your books:

ClickBank is a network of affiliates who solely promote digital products and ebooks. You list your ebook and people like me will market it via their blogs, landing pages, social media, and so on, and they will be paid a commission on each sale they deliver for you, and you keep the rest.

Kindle Direct Publishing by Amazon allows you to self-publish your ebooks and books for free and earn a 70% royalty on all of the sales. You keep control and set your own prices.

Shopify is a great way to sell online. You can create your own ecommerce shop in minutes, in your own name or brand, and add all of your ebooks and maybe even hardbacks for sale. You can promote it yourself, keep full control and grow a customer base who are fans of your writing.

That was just a few ways to become a freelancer and make money writing. Good luck!
